ICT Refresh Keeps Leading Law Firm On The Right Side Of Technology

The full-service law firm is committed to outstanding client service and legal excellence, and has Law Society Accredited Specialists in Business, Property, Family, Personal Injury, Industrial and Employment Law. It employs 65 people, including 7 partners, with offices in Sydney, Wollongong, Shellharbour and Dapto.

Business Problem

Senior management at Kells knew their current ICT infrastructure was nearing the end of its lifecycle. Business growth meant that data storage, backup and disaster recovery measures were no longer sufficient. This put the business at significant risk, with data protection mission critical for a large legal practice. Partners were keen to explore new technologies, such as virtualization, that promised a smarter, more robust and cost-effective investment.

Providing faster, more reliable remote network access was also critical for lawyers, as they frequently work and meet with clients away from the office.

Kells approached trusted ICT partner Novo IT for advice on developing a robust, cost-efficient 3-5 year infrastructure and data storage plan.


Novo IT Solution

Novo IT was already familiar with Kells' ICT systems and business processes, having provided managed services to the firm for several years.

"It really helped to have Novo IT know our history, and understand our future ICT needs," says Helen Benge. "The entire project was far easier than if we had been starting from scratch with a brand new provider."

Novo IT designed a high availability VMware vSphere virtualized architecture, hosted by a powerful new server. This provided robust and scalable storage that could be increased to meet the firm's growing business needs. It was a far smarter approach - with Kells only paying for what they use - than provisioning for the future with multiple, expensive servers that would be largely underutilized.

Veeam Backup & Replication were deployed for fast, flexible, and reliable recovery of virtualized applications and data. Veeam was configured with defined Recovery Point Objectives and Recovery Time Objectives, to avoid unacceptable consequences from a break in business continuity.

Citrix Xenapp 6.5 was deployed for fast and reliable remote network connections, so that the new user interface could be accessed from anywhere, at anytime.

The Novo IT Managed Services Team was engaged to proactively monitor and maintain Kells' new ICT infrastructure, and to ensure they continued to get the very best return on their investment.

Kells has minimized business risk courtesy of a stable and reliable server platform, with robust data storage and disaster recovery measures.

Lawyers at Kells enjoy an even more productive working environment, with an updated user interface and the ability to easily access the company network from any location.
